A rival to Photoshop Album?

Google has bought up photo album prg maker Picasa. From first looks, it looks pretty intuitive and has the cool factor: one reason that I would ditch the more expensive Photoshop Album. However, it's poor editing and rendering effects still makes its Adobe counterpart necessary; it's cheap price is one of the better

Ditch IE get Firefox

Ditch IE get Firefox!

Why? ok ill tell you why i've used IE since well since i started online and it amazes me how many secruity holes they have left open! for instant look at this the latest flaws that will leave ALL USERS OF microsoft's internet explorer vulnerable. Yes, ALL.

QUOTE: CNET reporter Robert Lemos zeroed in on why the attack was so scary. "This time," he wrote, "the flaws affect every user of Internet Explorer." That's about 95 percent of all Net users. No matter how well they had protected themselves against viruses, spyware, and everything else in the past, they were still vulnerable to yet another flaw in Microsoft's browser.

I have been a firefox user for now more than 4 months and have never look back! honestly i did my research theres no nasty holes left open has many more features than IE and hoestly it is twice as fast loading pages and images! go check it out download it try it if you like it set it as your default browser if not delete it it also has many plugins so what you waiting for go check it

More Gmail Invites yet again

Gmail seems to keep throwing invites everywhere that even im going to stop counting how many ive been getting- gee, this is sure going to dilute the value of gmail invites :( . Here's some tips if u want tons of gmail invites- Use your gmail account as ur primary email address, check it daily, make sure the ppl u invite use their gmail regularly 2 (so u have 2 give them to the right ppl), and use up all the invites once google gives you them (if you don't, you'll not get new ones; just send them invite to ur inbox and foward them 2 ppl later)

The Unoffical Gmail FAQ

The Unofficial Gmail FAQ

What is Gmail?

Gmail is Google's free web email service (currently in Beta, and not public to sign up) with 1 Gigabyte of storage.

Is Gmail a joke?

No, it's not. It's for real. The lunar research center was Google's April's Fool 2004.

Is Gmail good?

Yes, it is. It's very good.

Where can I find pictures of Gmail?

Here is a Gmail review with screenshots.

What's all the fuzz about Gmail privacy?

If you do not like your emails to be automatically handled by Google, you should not sign up for this free service. But if you do, Google will read the email automated (a computer will analyze its content) and pull relevant ads. Then the computer will forget about what's in the email.

Is Gmail completely free?

At the moment, it is. And it will likely always stay free, at least in its basic version.

How do I register for Gmail? How do I create my new Gmail account?

At the moment, Gmail is closed to the general public. You may be lucky and get an invitation to become beta-tester.

Where can I get a Gmail invitation?

Some Gmail invites can be found at eBay. I also hand out some in my blog, but I currently do not have any Gmail invitations to give away.

I have Gmail, how do I invite someone else?

You may not have any Gmail invitations to give away. If you do, they will be shown as links on the top menu. This may happen on special days, like Mother's Day.

How much is Gmail worth?

It was sold on eBay for around $100 or more, but recently the price fell to $20 because Google is giving out so much Gmail invitiations. There are also many competitions to get Gmail for free. If Gmail goes public, naturally no one will be paying for it anymore.

What does the "G" in "Gmail" mean?

The "G" in Gmail likey stands for "Google". Other suggestions are Googol, Gigabyte, Great, Godly, or just Good.

What is Gmail's storage limit?

You can save up to 1 Gigabyte overall, and 10 MB per attachment.

How can I search Gmail?

You can create various labels (like "xmas" or "holiday" or "friend") to assign to individual emails. You can also search all your past emails using a variety of search filters.

What kind of username can I choose?

Of course, your preferred Gmail username must be available. Added to that Gmail names must be from 6-30 characters. (Why must it be more than 6? Some believe this is so spammers can't easily generate random addresses to target.)

When will Gmail go public?

In weeks or months from now. Nobody knows for sure. Some suspect it will be in August 2004. There are already many, many Gmail invitations being sent around.

Some people get up to five new Gmail invitations from their Gmail account every day. I do not get any new. How does Google determine who can pass on Gmail invitations, and how many can be passed on?

Though nothing is known for sure, the amount of new Gmail invitations Gmailers can hand out seems to depend on how much the Gmail account is being used, and how many invitations are accepted. For example if you get five new invitations, you should send them out quickly that same day so you get five new invitations to pass on the next day. If you do not send out your invitations, you will not get new ones the next day. However it might also be connected to how many of your invitations are actually accepted, and put in use – so you need to find people who are actually really in need of Gmail.

Who is currently allowed into the program?

Gmail currently has several thousand beta testers, among them Google family members and friends.

I sent out mails with the same title to different people, how can I prevent the conversations from getting mixed up?

You need to find a unique subject line per mail sent to different persons, or else you are in permanent trouble sorting it out. Though the unique Gmail conversation approach makes sense, it's also quite flawed at the moment!

How can I reserve my Gmail account?

You can't reserve it at the moment.

I have two different accounts, one for Google Answers and one for Gmail – they constantly collide, what can I do?

You could complain to Google support, for one thing. I find this annoying too.

I do not have an account yet. How do I check if my Gmail name is taken?

Try this Gmail name availability checker.

Where can I find a Gmail to POP3 and SMTP to Gmail converter?

You can find one at Pop Goes the Gmail (it's a dot-net program which I did not test).

How fast is Gmail?

Gmail is very fast. This is due to its underlying DHTML concept, which unfortunately also prevents some browser accessibility features.

On which browsers does Gmail run?

Gmail runs on IE5.5+, NN7.1/ Mozilla 1.4+/ Firefox 0.8+ (JavaScript and cookies must be enabled in the browser).

Do I always have to login to Gmail? How are my settings stored?

You can sign-in to Gmail for two weeks without being asked for your password again. Some things in Gmail are stored on your computer via a cookie, so switching your browser on one computer, or switching to another computer, may make Gmail forget certain settings (like some starred messages).

How long can I keep my account idle until Google deletes it?

If you did not log-in for 9 months, your Gmail account will be deleted.

Does Gmail support automatic forwarding, and "POP3" access?

Not at the moment. But the Google help states in the future "you will be able to access Gmail messages from non-Gmail accounts for free or at a nominal fee."

How can I create a new folder in Gmail?

In Gmail, you can't create new folders. Instead you create labels, which you then attach to individual conversations. The good thing about labels is that multiple labels can be tagged on a mail, something just not possible with the folder concept of Hotmail and others. The labels are shown at the left side; attach them by using the combo box on top. You can also create filters to automatically label incoming mail.

How do I sort my Gmail?

Instead of folders, Gmail features labels. Gmails can thus be put into different categories at one. E.g. you could have a label "job", a label "blog feedback", or a label "girlfriend".

How do I automatically convert my Hotmail, Yahoo Mail or Outlook Express address book to a Gmail address book?

You can import your contact list as CSV text file. CSV means Comma-Separated Values and is a often-used text format storing data. Detailed explanations on how to export CSV data from your old account into Gmail can be found in the Gmail help entry on importing.

How do I send new mails arriving in my Hotmail/ Yahoo Mail account to Gmail?

The program GetMail does just that- fowarding all your hotmail emails to your gmail account; just keep your computer/ app running and your Gmail = old hotmail - not having to check your hotmail EVER AGAIN.

How do I move my emails from Hotmail to Gmail?

See this detailed help page on transferring your Hotmails.

How can I transfer my Netscape mail to Gmail?

Here's Mbox & Maildir to Gmail Loader (GML) to import your Mbox or Maildir files into Gmail (works with Mac OS X too).

How well does Gmail prevent spam?

Gmail is quite successful at preventing spam, with a typical ratio of 95% filtered spam, and 1% spam-filtered normal mail. What's more important, you get the time to delete spam before your account is full (because of the 1 GB account size).

What are Gmail's keyboard shortcuts?

Keyboard shortcuts come with a predefined set of functions (like "c" for compose, "/" for search and so on) which can be either turned off or on.

I like it simple. Can I have a print view, or show the emails raw text?

You can both switch to a print view (by clicking on "Print conversation" in the upper right), as well as click on "More options" -> "Show original" to see the mail's raw content.

What is "Cc", what is "Bcc"?

When you reply, Gmail offers you to "Add Cc" or "Add Bcc". Cc means "carbon copy" and will send a copy of the email to someone, even though that someone is not addressed in the mail. A Bcc goes a step further by not even listing the recipient of the Bcc in the address field; it's a "Blind Carbon Copy".

Is there a Gmail category in DMOZ.org (the Open Directoy Project, ODP)?

Yes, the Gmail category in DMOZ is Computers/ Internet/ E-mail/ Free/ Web-Based/ G/ Gmail/.

What are Gmail snippets?

Gmail snippets will show the first part of the message right in the title bar, similar to how Google shows snippets of web pages in their result pages. Snippets can be disabled in the options.

What are Gmail conversations?

Google groups emails and their replies in your inbox within single "conversations", a sort of thread known from newsgroups. Clicking on a single conversation will open up the history. Actually, Gmail just sorts by the email subject. Note this can at times cause confusion when different conversations to different people are merged into one.

Why should I want to "star" my message?

Starring your mail equals putting a little red flag on it in Outlook. This means: watch this mail, it's of importance to you somehow and acts as reminder. Of course you might use stars in any way you seem fit. In a way, it's just another label, but one that comes with an icon.

What are Gmail's plans for a "Gmail messenger"?

Nothing of this sort is known to the public yet, though Gmail already feels an awful lot like instant messaging. Gchat might be the next application area Google Inc. will cover, but official statements (or Google Lab releases) are yet to be made.

How is Gmail spelled and pronounced?

Gmail is spelled without a dash, as in G-Mail, even though some use that as well. You can also write gMail, or Gmail, or GMail, though those are not common. As for pronounciation, I suggest either "Gee-Mail", or "Kmale".

Is Gmail available in German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish ...?

Currently the Gmail interface is restricted to English. Emails can be sent in any language, naturally.

When was Gmail started?

Gmail's Beta test officialy started on April 1st, but the web application was tested internally for around a year.

Does Gmail now offer 1 Terabyte of storage?

No. Only Google employees get 1 Terabyte. However there was a bug which had many more people seeing the 1 Terabyte. Apparently the bug has been fixed by now.

I can't connect to my account, my Gmail is down... what can I do?

There is not much you can do when Gmail is down. This happens from time to time. Remember this service is still in beta and be patient, then try again a while later. Note sometimes Gmail is down for some people but not all, and exactly what causes this is not known. The longest for me was that I couldn't connect to Gmail for a whole weekend, but these troubles seem to have been fixed by now.

I don't see any Gmail ads. What's wrong?

If you are new to Gmail you may wonder where all the ads are. In fact ads are rather rare and don't show up all the time. Neither can you easily trigger them by sending some commercial phrases to yourself.

Are Gmail ads annoying?

Gmail advertisement is very unobtrusive. It is only present in about 25% of your emails. Often, you will also find a related links section (no advertisement) to the right-hand side. AdWords making it into the Gmail program will be tested "in the wild first", so you get more relevant ads than on typical AdSense sites.

Where can I talk about Gmail?

I suggest Orkut's Gmail community, or the moderated Gmail users community, or Googlegmails.com.

Where can I find the latest Gmail news?

I keep myself updated via my Google and Gmail news headlines.

Gmail Notifier 1.0

<>The Bottom Line

Gmail Notifier offers stylish and useful new mail announcements for a Gmail account. It gives a great overview of new messages, but doesn't allow you to highlight or ignore certain mail with filters.

Visit Their Web Site

Pros
  • Gmail Notifier lets you know about new mail in a Gmail account in a useful and unobtrusive manner
  • You get a preview of the message's sender, subject and snippet
  • Gmail Notifier can make your email client to be used when you click a mailto: link
Cons
  • Gmail Notifier doesn't allow you to delete or archive mail directly
  • You can't specify special announcements for certain labels or filters

Description

  • Gmail Notifier announces new threads in a Gmail account.
  • A tray icon and sounce alert while a pop-up shows message info (sender, subject and snippet).
  • You can go to the Gmail Inbox directly from Gmail Notifier.
  • Gmail Notifier can also set Gmail to serve as your default email account for mailto: links.
  • Gmail Notifier supports Windows 2000/3/XP.

Guide Review - Gmail Notifier 1.0

Sometimes, I have my Gmail account open in a dedicated browser tab. The "Inbox" automatically refreshes now and then, letting me know when new mail arrives in the page title. This is useful, but new Gmail announcements can be much more useful. Gmail Notifier demonstrates how, and it does so with style. A task bar icon and pop-up windows are enough for Gmail Notifier to inform you about any new mail that arrives with essential info — the sender, the subject and a snippet from the body — readily available. You can also set up a notification sound for Gmail Notifier to use when it finds new mail. It's easy to open the Gmail Inbox in your default browser from Gmail Notifier, and as an additional bonus the installer can set Gmail to serve as your default email account for messages when you click a mailto: link. For all this usefulness, it would be nice if Gmail Notifier let you announce certain mail (that got assigned a label by a filter, for example) in a special way. There's also no way to interact with the messages from the pop-up and delete or archive them right away.

A new homepage

Uh huh. The new website for me blog will now be www.davidsblog.tk. simple to remember, at least when compared to edavidtan.blogspot.com. :D

Is Gmail going to be released soon

That is the million dollar question. Why, I have a gut feeling that they really do- a huge wave of gmail invitations has swamped me gmail account (together with those of me family members) recently even though i have gmail for quite some time now.

well, i really hope they dont cos it'll really lose the novelty factor, not 2 mention the fact that you cant use those invites google gives you in exchange 4 something nice (like lackeys :D).

anyhow, gmail still rocks, though i think that it could still b very much improved- better spam filters anyone?

Microsoft. Why art thou so cheap?

Yup. i have once agained confirmed that microsoft is truly a cheapskate; ai, they just lost that bit of confidence i gained in them when they started to ship SP2 for free anywhere in the world to whomever you are. Here's the reason: MSN messenger has a limit on the number of contacts you have. Yup, and i have reached that limit of 150. Bottom line: i cannot add anyone now. Hmm, does microsoft know that globe-trotting polyglots that have lived on more than 2 continents who have more than 150 acquanitances actually exsist? So why offer a free service with caveats?

On Art

Talk about awesome gallaries online. One of them really blew me away. Here are some great pieces:

IB Council Website

Just updated the MB IB council website a couple of mins ago; it's just a more pleasant facade that will usher in the newer flash interface in the month to come. If anyone here's g8 in flash and would volunteer their help in return for something cool, email me at ibcouncil@gmail.com- The IB Council would truly thank you.

On Google® adsense™

Seems like blogger.com is inviting all members who blog to register with Google adsense- a program where you paid if somebody clicks on the links that google puts in your blog. sounds cool. so i signed up for it; even if i get accepted into the program, i dont expect it to generate much revenue though...

More google mania

Google labs is probably the most interesting lab that ever is; tons of stuff that come out of their labs are awesome; so here's some goodies that are a must if Windows is your OS:

1) The Google toolbar for Microsoft's Internet Explorer

2) The Google Deskbar

3) The official Gmail notifer

4) Plus the best Gmania that happened to me 2 day is that i got meself 6 invites yet again! That's how it works ppl, the more u use your Gmail, the more google rewards you

How to make full use of your gmail account.

Gmail's all the craze with 1GB of free storage and a max attachemnt size of 10MB (wow). but not may ppl know the many cool stuff behind gmail that makes it gmail. Here's me list:

1) Keyboard shortcuts http://gmail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=6594&topic=-1

-Keyboard shortcuts save you time by allowing you to explore Gmail quickly without taking your hands off the keyboard to use the mouse. These shortcuts also make it easier for you to navigate through Gmail's features, like Conversation View, which allows you to see all of your messages stacked neatly on top of each other, like a deck of cards.

To turn these case-sensitive shortcuts on or off, click 'Settings,' then pick an option next to 'Keyboard shortcuts.'

2) Awesome Firefox support; easy access to your gmail

-If you have Microsoft's Internet Explorer and that's ur default browser, ur in big trouble- tons of bugs and hacks and vulnerabilities and what makes it the WORST BROWSER TO USE. Great safe alternatives like Firefox, Mozilla, and Opera do exsist. Firefox's me favourite cos of it's clean, sleek interface and g8 gmail integration.

<>

3) Awesome programs that you should have once u have gmail:

1. Pop Goes the Gmail - Route Gmail through your favorite POP3 client

2. G-Tray - Getting tired of logging in over and over? Add a systray notification app and log in automatically when you've got new msgs

3. GML- Import days, months, or years of email archives into Gmail- multiple clients and OS's supported

4. G-Mailto- Make mailto: links auto-open in Gmail.

5. GetMail- Foward all your hotmail emails to your gmail account

That kinda's all the cool tools that makes gmail special. If you wanna know more on using your gmail to the max, check out this flash tutorial i made.

Just a few mins ago, me mom's gmail account chalked up 6 invitations. (I got 6 too last week; used them all up on friends, me bro, and meself again of cos).
